So, how did it go for you? Room 18's memories of athletics day.

It was the most embarrassing day ever. The athletics was reborn and almost took revenge on me! It was like Mission Survival. - JK

The 200 metres is one of the hardest subjects for me. I’m not a very fast runner, though I dream of being a champion. - Andrew

Boom, boom, boom my heart was beating like crazy, I felt like it was going to burst out of my chest. It was time for long jump. “Yep, go!” I sped towards the mat and jumped as far as I could. I landed 15cm from everybody. “Whoa hoooollllly!” some people said. - Gian

Oh my goodness I was 5th at throwing discuss! I was surprised when Mrs Moore said I was 5th. - Dana

Discus is like frisbee but you hold it differently. - Lily

In discus it was so awesome for me because I didn’t think I was going to come first. I thought Ronan was going to but I sneaked in front of him. - Lucas

He threw the discus and it went swoosh over my head. I swear if I was any taller it would have hit me in the head! - Nyle.

I soared through the air like a frisbee. Whoomf! I landed on a soft squishy mat. I made it!!! - Giona

There were two bad things that happened. One was at long jump and the other one was at high jump. At long jump I jumped on the wood. On high jump I had to hold the stick and when Joyce jumped the stick hit my wrist. - Kelly

Sprints was my favourite. I came 4th in the 100 metre because I had really fast people in my group. - Daniel

When I went to shot put I had a go and it went really far, like a tennis ball being thrown. I might be in cluster for shot put. - Ethan

I failed in all of them. I’m not Miss Trunchbull in shot put. I’m not an Olympic discus thrower. I can’t sprint 200m without coming last. I can’t do long jump and I’m definitely too scared to do high jump. So that’s me for you. The only sports I am good at are...dancing, swimming, badminton, netball and finally, tennis. - Reese

I’m coming first! Oh no, she has over taken me. But, whizz she’s gone. Just a little longer and I have won! I was zooming like a rocket booster. - Rachel

It was my turn. I put the ball up to my jaw and threw as hard as I could. I did it! I did shot put for the very first time. Did I make it into the semi-final? No I didn’t make it, but my best friend did. - Madison

We went to long jump. First I made it through. Next, when I jumped, I jumped from the board but I didn’t go far. Thus, I was out. We moved on to high jump. Hated it! All of us tried 80 centimetres first. I couldn’t do it. - Catherine.

All of these events are great, but shot put is for me because, well, I never knew I could lift something that heavy. But it was worth it. For this you don’t need to be speedy, all you need to be is pretty strong. - Hudson

My favourite was sprinting. I’ve never come first in a race. I was so happy that I won. I crossed the finish line with my arms up. I mean I was versing a lot faster guys than me and I smiled a lot. - Aiden

Thud! The ball landed fifty centimetres away form me. I was not happy with my throw. The ball was as heavy as an elephant. I slumped to the back of the line. A couple of minutes later it was my turn again. I grabbed the ball and held it to my jaw, then I pushed it out. It was a pretty good throw, at least it went further than my first throw. - Anita

I threw my ball. It didn’t go as far as the amasing Valerie Adams would have thrown it. Mrs Poland called out who was in the semi-finals. I held my breath, please let it be me! It took a while and then suddenly my name was called out! - Marianne

It was my turn. I jumped, easy peasy 85 centimetres. Now it was 90. Again, easy peasy. Now at 95, I was shaking badly. I tried to hold myself proudly. I jumped. I did well, still. Time for 1 metre, when I heard the words “Tara’s going to win”, which put me off. Crash, I hit the bar. On my second turn I did it with no trouble and I made it into cluster. - Tara

I was standing in front of the starting line for the 200 metre race. BANG! Off I went racing at top speed. I reached the end after Amily. Then i got third place. - Sylvia

My heart is busy because of competition. First we did shot put. It was hard! We have to do is put the metal ball to the jaw and put your head and ball back. Pop your arms, like a frog then BOOM! Do you understand? - Sera

I wait quietly, everything stops. The gun goes. They’re off. I am last but I catch up and cross the finish. They give me a stick. I am screaming with excitement. - Tyrone

When I did the semi-final I came first. Then we had to race again. On the final I ran as hard as I could. All the kids were watching me. - Dan

It was my turn. I ran as fast as I could to not have a no-jump. But seems like I was too fast so I went over the board and Mrs Lucas said “No jump.” I was not impressed. - Joshua

I was jumping like a stupid frog on the high jump and I did not jump over the 80 cm high jump. - Fiona

I was next up, I felt shy...it was my turn. I called out “Good morning Mrs Moore, my name is Bruce.” I was ready to throw, I wound up normally, “three, two, one, HEAVE.” Then the heavy discus was flying in the air. It landed about ten metres away form the circle and I was in the top ten. - Bruce

Time out! Stop!! My heart! Gosh, It was so nerve wracking! We were about to do 200 metre sprinting! I didn't want to do it! Had to start concentrating. CLAP! I began to run fast as a cheetah. The cold wind whosshed past me. Suddenly I started laughing! I was enjoying it! I felt like flying. Really, I never thought that I could do this. - Jenny
